Monkey Bread

My familys recipe for monkey bread, which varies from the traditional by being a biscuit not a dessert.

Ingredients

  • Whisk, or Electric Mixer with Dough Blades
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Large Bread Board
  • Rolling Pin
  • 2½" Round Cookie/Biscuit Cutter
  • 10"/3 qt Ring Pan
  • Clean Kitchen Towel
  • Small Cup
  • Small Sauce Pan
  • Spoon
  • Basting Brush
  • Small Bowl
  • Large Plate

Steps

  1. Grease mixing bowl, and ring pan.
  2. Lightly flour bread board.
  3. Cut butter into ½ cup, and ½ cup units.
  4. Sprinkle yeast into warm water in water glass, gently using spoon as necessary.
  5. Heat milk and ½ cup butter together until warm in sauce pan.
  6. Pour into mixing bowl.
  7. Add sugar and eggs.
  8. Beat until smooth.
  9. Stir in dissolved yeast mixture and salt.
  10. Add 1 cup flour.
  11. Beat until smooth.
  12. Gradually add enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
  13. Turn out on lightly floured board.
  14. Knead until smooth and satiny.
  15. Place in mixing bowl.
  16. Butter top of dough lightly using basting brush.
  17. Cover with clean kitchen towel.
  18. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
    • ~30 minutes.
    • Dough is doubled when you can press 2 fingers into it about ½" deep, and the dent remains after removing fingers.
  19. Punch dough down.
  20. Turn out on lightly floured board.
  21. Knead lightly.
  22. Melt remaining butter in small bowl.
  23. Roll dough out on board until about ⅓" thick using rolling pin.
  24. Cut dough into rounds using cookie cutter.
  25. Roll and cut scraps until all dough is used.
  26. Dip each piece into melted butter to coat both sides.
  27. Place in overlapping layers in ring pan.
  28. Cover pan with kitchen towel.
  29. Set oven to 350°, to preheat.
  30. Place in a warm place to rise.
    • ~45 minutes.
    • Wait until oven is pre-heated before proceeding.
  31. Bake until nicely browned and loaf sounds hollow when thumped.
    • ~35 minutes.
    • Begin checking at 30 minutes.
  32. Turn out on large plate and serve while warm.
